How to avoid travel scams

Find out how you can protect yourself from a travel scam.

Unfortunately travel scams are a frequent occurrence, affecting thousands of travellers each year. The need to rest and explore new destinations can make you vulnerable to malicious people who want to take advantage of you. Here are some practical tips to follow before and during your trip and in case of fraud.

Before the trip

Book only from reliable sources: Book your tickets and accommodation only from trusted websites or travel agents with a good reputation. Avoid unknown websites or offers that seem "too good to be true".

Check the reviews: Before booking a hotel or any other accommodation, read the reviews written by other travellers to check its credibility. Apart from Tripadvisor and Booking, which are usually the first websites that all of us check out, we recommend that you go on to other websites such as lastminute.com and dondoo which can be extremely useful during your trip.

Be careful with your personal information
: Never share sensitive personal information, such as card details or passwords, through emails or unsafe websites.

Insure your trip: Take out a travel insurance policy that covers cancellation, lost luggage and medical expenses.

Make copies of all your travel documents: Make copies of all your important travel documents, such as your passport, tickets and hotel reservations. In case something goes wrong, you’ll still have all the necessary details to submit a refund request or to contact the competent authorities.

Talk to other travellers: The experience of other travellers can be very useful. Talk to friends or family members who have travelled recently and listen to their advice. They may warn you of potential problems or give you helpful tips on how to avoid scams.

During your trip

Stay alert: Always be aware of people who might be trying to approach you, and make sure to keep an eye on your personal belongings.

Do not leave your personal belongings unsupervised: Leave your valuables in the safe in your room or in another secure place.

Pay in cash or by card: When you’re shopping or paying for services delivered, pay in cash or by card. Avoid giving money to strangers.

Watch out for “helpful” strangers: Don’t automatically trust strangers who approach you and offer to help you or give you “travel tips”.

Use your common sense: If something looks suspicious, it probably is. Follow your instincts and avoid situations that make you feel uncomfortable.

In addition, you can make use of options such as travel insurance offered to NBG card holders.

How to avoid travel scams

In the event of fraud

Act immediately: If you suspect you've been a victim of fraud, notify the police and your bank immediately.

Keep the evidence: Keep all evidence, such as payment receipts, emails or messages connected to the scam.

Report the incident: You can also report the incident to the competent authorities, such as the National Tourism Organization or the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

Unfortunately, travel scams are a frequent occurrence and can ruin your vacation. Be aware of the risks and choose reliable sources for bookings, protect your personal information and money, stay vigilant, follow common sense, and in case of fraud, act immediately and keep the evidence. With a little care and proper preparation, you can enjoy your trip stress free and filled with beautiful memories. Have a great vacation!
