Building resilience to natural disasters

Find out how you can get prepared for potential natural disasters.
In recent years, natural disasters have become more frequent and more severe, threatening the very existence of entire communities and regions around the world.
In Greece too, extreme weather events have become more frequent and more intense, making the climate crisis one of the main problems facing households and businesses.  In particular, according to a survey by the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies, as of 1993 to the present day, €951 million in compensation has been paid, with 70% of this, i.e. €665 million, concerning the period from 2017 to 2023. At the same time, according to the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods, 7% of Greeks (1 in 13 citizens) had to deal with a natural disaster this year, with almost 8 out of 10 expecting further intensification of the phenomena in the near future.

And if it is beyond our powers to control the natural elements, the right proactive measures could significantly reduce the impact of a natural disaster.

Create an emergency backpack

It’s vitally important to have an emergency kit, a backpack, equipped with basic items (bottled water, food, clothing, medicine, a torch) that you'll need if you have to leave your home in an emergency situation. This should be kept somewhere in the house where everyone can get to it if needed, including young children.

Transfer all your financial and asset data to a memory stick or the Cloud

Although the transformation to the digital age has made great progress in our country in recent years, there are still many of us who insist on keeping our financial information on paper. This is a habit that could prove to be disastrous in cases of extreme weather events, making it a critical need to digitally save records such as birth and marriage certificates, tax returns, insurance policies, and so on. A USB memory stick, for example, although tiny, can be used to store masses of information — so it could be used to keep all your valuable data. The same applies to the Cloud. That way, you need never fear that your financial and other data will be lost, while you you'll save time and effort by not having to get related documents and certificates reissued.

Keep a Digital record of spaces and objects

Some objects, beyond sentimental value, may have financial value too. So, to be able to confirm that you are the actual owner of objects and property in the event of some kind of natural disaster, it would be a good idea to have them saved in digital form on your mobile or camera. You could do this for both your home or your business property, digitally capturing interiors and exteriors.

Open an account that you can use in an emergency

Saving funds, especially in times of inflation, is a challenge.  However, the money you save can be used in the event of natural disasters. One year's savings could provide you with a solid financial cushion. And it would be good to keep your savings "locked up" in some way so that you’re not tempted to make withdrawals for other reasons. In emergency situations, cash savings come in handy too.

Get insured with the right insurance plans

Insurance is an effective weapon in the fight against climate change. Compared with the rest of Europe, Greece continues to be relatively underinsured against natural disasters, which makes it hard for households and businesses to return quickly to normalcy after a natural disaster. To this end, NBG offers insurance plans, specially created by Ethniki Insurance to protect both your family and your property.
