A digital community for all

Discover how a digital society can be created for all.
The internet has revolutionized everyday life, as it is now essential for accessing information, finding a job and socializing online. However, deficiencies in infrastructure and education, economic inequality and age can lead to digital exclusion. Many people are not fully active in the digital community, because they lack the financial resources or skills required.

Building an inclusive digital community

Creating an inclusive digital community requires a complex approach. Governments and companies need to work together and enhance both access and accessibility, especially in areas that lack infrastructures. This collaboration could include innovative solutions such as satellite internet connection services or advanced public Wi-Fi networks. Accordingly, subsidy programs or finding more advanced equipment can make technology accessible to more people. In addition, public libraries and cultural centres can provide public areas with computers and Wi-Fi networks free of charge, enabling more effective digital education programmes that focus on basic computer skills, cyber security and assessing information of vital importance.
Such programmes should cover all age groups and competence levels, promoting lifelong learning. The integration of technology into learning courses backed by effective teacher training is essential, so that students can develop the digital skills needed to enter an increasingly technology-driven world.

An inclusive digital community is vitally important

Ensuring equal opportunities and serving everyone inclusively in a digital community results in more people reaching their full potential.

Digital skills: Digital literacy equips people with the skills needed to access education, find a job, participate in social life and access health services, such as the Prolepsis Institute's iHeal.

Economic growth: Increased access to technology boosts innovation and business opportunities, leading to economic growth and the creation of new jobs.

Improved social inclusion: Technology can bridge geographical distances and connect people from different backgrounds, promoting social inclusion.

Transparency and accountability: Free access to information enables citizens to participate more actively in democratic processes and mobilize governments to take relevant action.

A sustainable future: Digital technologies can play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty and access to healthcare.

What you can do

Raise awareness: Support free internet access and digital education programs. Find out about the EU funded Digital Europe programme, which provides digital technology to businesses, citizens and public administrations.

Share your skills: Volunteer to teach basic computer skills and online security practices to others. Tech Senior is a program that enables volunteers to help senior citizens become familiar with technology. For more information, you can visit  TechSenior.

Support inclusive platforms: Choose platforms and services, such as those offered by DYPA, NKUA and Visit Greece, that prioritize accessibility while covering various needs.

Promote respect: Be aware of digital discrimination and promote inclusion and respect in your online communication. Use neutral language, avoiding words and phrases that reinforce stereotypes or are offensive to groups of people. Don't engage in personal attacks or verbal abuse and create an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves. If you are witness to or experience discrimination, report it to the appropriate bodies.

The digital age brings with it the opportunity to minimise the digital divide and build a future where everyone can thrive in an interconnected world. Using the power of technology, we can create an inclusive digital community where equal opportunities are available to all.
