Strengthening social bonds as we get older

Discover tips for strengthening social bonds as we get older.

As we get older, we seek more attention and love, much like young children do. Older people need social bonds to enjoy a more fulfilling and healthy life. Relevant research published in BMJ Journals shows the beneficial effects that frequent social interaction has on the health of older people, with their life expectancy increasing as relationships with those around them are maintained and strengthened.

But this is not always possible, because various factors sometimes cause some older people to become socially isolated. These may include:

  • Biological factors, such as chronic health problems and diseases, which prevent individuals from socializing.
  • Personal factors, associated with the loss of loved ones or the separation from their children, which negatively impacts their psychology.
  • Financial factors, forcing people to refrain from contacts or activities they cannot afford, even if they are willing and physically able to enjoy them.

For many people life after retirement is not easy. They have to deal with a day-to-day reality that is completely different from the one they were used to, which in many cases is more difficult. In any case, everyone has the right to human contact and there are ways to pursue it. For example:

Invite people over

During the pandemic, one thing that became clear is that nothing should be taken for granted. Thus, visits from relatives and friends that once may have seemed a little tedious have now taken on greater meaning. By inviting people over, older people can keep in touch with their friends and relatives, and this is extremely beneficial for their mental health and wellbeing.

Embrace technology

It's never too late to discover the benefits of the internet. Many seniors have started using new technologies, embracing social media in order to search for old friends or acquaintances or meet new ones by participating in groups and actions. But as with any new phenomenon, you need to apply due caution.
